UNA PEQUEÑA JOYA/A LITTLE JEWEL

"¿Sabe usted, querido amigo -prosiguió Derville tras una pausa -, que hay en nuestra sociedad tres hombres, el sacerdote, el médico y el hombre de leyes, que no pueden estimar el mundo?"


A través de Los enamoramientos, de Javier Marías, llegó a mis manos esta pequeña, por tamaño, gran joya de la literatura francesa. Un relato que conmueve al lector y lo lleva a cavilar sobre los grandes dramas universales y con los que, desgraciadamente, no puede dejar de sentirse identificado. La historia de un hombre muerto, que no lo está, y que ha de luchar contra la injusta justicia, las clases adineradas a las que perteneció y que ahora le vuelven la espalda, la asfixiante moral de aquella época que en muchos casos nos recuerda a ésta; el desprecio del hombre por la honradez y la verdad; el mermado valor de la amistad y del amor frente a las convenciones y el poder, y la triste sorpresa del hombre que regresa al hogar después de mucho tiempo y contempla, abatido, que nada es igual, para terminar descubriendo que quizá nada cambió tanto, sino que a su vuelta comprendió la verdad.  Como ocurre con tantas otras obras magistrales, el hecho de ser escrita en 1832, no le resta en absoluto vigencia. Al contrario, y como he dicho antes, por desgracia, es extremadamente moderna con su crítica a la corrupción política, a las acciones interesadas y a la falta de humanidad. A pesar de todo, es una novela optimista en la que prevalece la ternura y la bondad del coronel Hyacinthe Chabert por encima de la mediocridad y la maldad de la sociedad.

Through the novel by Javier Marias, The Infatuations,  a little but great novel arrived to my hands. A real jewel of French literature. It's a story that touches the reader, leading him or her to meditate about the big universal tragedies and to feel identifed with them. It's the story of a dead man, which is not, who must fight against the unfair justice, the wealthy classes he used to belong to and now ignored by them; the stifling moral of that time, of our time too; the disdain of the human being towards honesty and truth; the lessened value of friendship and love in front of social conventions and power; the sad surprise of a man who comes back home after a long period of absence to downheartedly face a completely new world, and finally discover that that change is not real but that now he is understanding the truth. As it happens with other great literature works, the fact of having been written in 1832, does not take its validity away. On the contrary, and as I told before, it is unfortunately extremely modern with its criticism on political corruption, selfish actions and lack of humanity. However, it's an optimistic novel where the tenderness and goodness of colonel Hyacinthe Chabert prevails about the mediocrity and the evil of society.
