LA SEÑORA KING/ Mrs. KING

Creo que el verano es uno de esos momentos en que a los adultos nos cuesta menos sacar el niño que llevamos, o deberíamos, llevar dentro. Soy una convencida de esta manida y optimista teoría, ¡qué le vamos a hacer!.

Por eso me encanta en esta época estival tener entre mis manos una buena novela en que los protagonistas sean pequeñajos que viven algún tipo de aventura. Como además me gusta el suspense, hoy sugiero la lectura de una novelista que, desde mi punto de vista, no lo tiene fácil. Ser la mujer de un reconocido escritor no es la mejor manera de triunfar en el mundo literario. Me diréis que eso no es cierto, que teniendo ese tipo de influencia cualquier editorial se prestará a publicar lo escrito. Y eso es cierto. Pero, por otro lado, las comparaciones serán inevitables y se convertirá en un imposible navegar en solitario por la mente de los lectores. Sin embargo, yo, en su día, me atreví a elegir la novela de  Tabitha King, esposa del gran Stephen King, como lectura veraniega. Esa mujer que siempre aparece en los agradecimientos del escritor, como su apoyo, su correctora, su amiga. Y me llevé una grata sorpresa. No voy a mentir diciendo que no me enfrenté a la novela sin ciertos prejuicios porque no fue así. Pensé, "y esta mujer, ¿cómo se le ocurre dedicarse a la literatura y, además, al suspense?" Pero me encontré con una narrativa que no recordaba para nada a su marido, una novela bien construida, entretenida pero exquisitamente narrada. Aunque fue Michael McDowell quien inició la escritura de este libro, a su muerte, Tabitha King fue la encargada de darle forma y finalizarla, y, en mi opinión, lo hizo de manera brillante. Ambientada en la sofocante sociedad del sur de Estados Unidos, King analiza y pone al descubierto, de manera minuciosa y afilada, las costumbres y creencias de sus protagonistas. Una historia de fantasmas, pero muy real.

I think summertime is one of the moments when adults find easy to bring out their hidden kid. I'm deeply convinced of this optimistic theory, what can we do!. Well, the thing is that, in summer, I love reading a good book where kids experience any kind of adventure. And, as I also like intrigue, today I want to suggest the reading of a novel written by a writer who, from my point of view, has been very brave. She is the wife of a very famous writer, which I think it's not the best way to have success in the literary world. You would say that it's not true because her position allows her to easily been able to publish with any publisher house. Ok, I agree, but it's also true that comparisons will be always there. Anyway, a couple of summers ago, I chose this novel by Tabitha King, Stephen King's wife, and I never regretted. I must admit that I faced the book with some prejudices. I thought: why has she chosen to become a writer, and indeed to write this kind of books?" But I was pleasantly surprised. Her narrative is exquisite and has nothing to do with her husband's books, and the story is very well constructed. Michael Dowell was the writer who began this story but when he died, Tabitha King became the responsible of giving form to his notes and she did it pretty well. The story takes place in the suffocating  society of the South of the United States, and King anlyzes and denudes the customs and believings of its inhabitants. A ghost story, but very real.
